Background of the study
Viral memes have become a ubiquitous element of Nigerian digital culture, profoundly influencing morphological patterns. On platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, memes encapsulate humor, social commentary, and cultural critique through innovative visual and textual combinations (Akinlade, 2023). These digital artifacts often employ creative wordplay, blending, truncation, and even the invention of entirely new words to convey meaning quickly and effectively. The spontaneous and highly shareable nature of memes encourages rapid dissemination and adaptation of linguistic forms, resulting in noticeable morphological shifts among Nigerian users. The comparative study of Instagram and TikTok memes reveals differences in user demographics, content style, and linguistic creativity. Instagram memes tend to favor stylized text that accompanies images, while TikTok memes frequently integrate audio and visual elements that enhance linguistic play (Ibrahim, 2024). These differences contribute to distinct morphological trends on each platform, underscoring the role of technology and media in shaping language. This research seeks to document and analyze these patterns, exploring how memes serve as catalysts for morphological innovation in a rapidly digitizing society (Okafor, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the growing influence of viral memes in shaping language, there is insufficient research on how these memes affect morphological patterns in Nigerian digital discourse. The existing literature often treats memes as cultural phenomena without delving into their linguistic implications (Chukwu, 2024). This study addresses the gap by comparing Instagram and TikTok memes to determine how each platform fosters distinct morphological innovations. The challenge lies in systematically analyzing the morphological features embedded in visual and textual content, which are often context-specific and rapidly evolving. Without a comparative framework, it is difficult to assess the broader impact of meme culture on language structure. This research aims to fill this void by providing empirical evidence on the morphological changes induced by viral memes (Afolabi, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze the morphological patterns evident in viral memes on Instagram and TikTok.
  2. To compare the linguistic innovations between the two platforms.
  3. To assess the impact of meme culture on Nigerian language evolution.

Research questions

  1. What morphological changes are evident in Nigerian viral memes?
  2. How do Instagram and TikTok differ in their influence on morphological patterns?
  3. What is the impact of meme-induced innovations on overall language structure?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of how viral memes influence morphological patterns in Nigerian digital communication. The findings will offer valuable insights for linguists and cultural theorists, contributing to a deeper understanding of digital language innovation and its broader implications for society (Akinlade, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is confined to the examination of viral memes on Instagram and TikTok in the Nigerian context. It focuses solely on morphological analysis and does not address other linguistic dimensions or platforms.

Definitions of terms

  • Viral Meme: A humorous or culturally relevant image, video, or text that rapidly gains popularity online.
  • Morphological Patterns: The structure and formation of words in a language.
  • Linguistic Innovation: The emergence of new word forms or modifications to existing words.
